Databases and E-resources

Web Resources

PhilPapers is an online index and bibliography that covers a variety of research content in philosophy: books, journals, open access archives, and personal websites maintained by professional philosophers. The site supports topical browsing as well as simple and advanced searching.

Below are a list of databases useful for finding articles on philosophical topics and reviews of books of philosophy. To access and use these databases you will need a valid Harvard ID and PIN.

Philosopher's Index (via EBSCO)

The electronic version of Philosopher's Index provides bibliographic information and abstracts for articles and books on philosophy published since 1940.

Once you have found a citation in Philosopher's Index, you can click on the "Find it @ Harvard" button. If Harvard subscribes to the journal referenced in the citation, you will be taken to an electronic version of that journal where you will be able to access the article. Please note that the "Find it @ Harvard" button generally appears next to a citation regardless of whether Harvard subscribes to the publication. Only after you have clicked on the button will you know if there is electronic access to the material.

Academic Search Premier (via EBSCO)

Academic Search Premier contains material from thousands of journals. Full-text articles are available from about half of these journals. All journal citations, whether full-text or bibliographic-only, are fully indexed and abstracted . The collection is particularly strong in the social sciences and the humanities.
