Prescott-Couch publishes "Explanation and Manipulation" in Noûs

Alexander Prescott-Couch (Harvard University, PhD) has had his article "Explanation and Manipulation" accepted for publication in the journal Noûs. Prescott-Couch, who is currently a postodoctoral associate at MIT, received his PhD from Harvard in 2015 for his dissertation Rational Reconstruction and the Construction of an Interlocutor, which combined work in democratic theory and philosophy of science to explore how journalists and social scientists enable our understanding of others through the construction of idealized--purposefully inaccurate--interpretations of their...

Rabenberg and Gura Sadovsky named Safra Graduate Fellows in Ethics

Michael Rabenberg and Ronni Gura Sadovsky will join the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics as Graduate Fellows for the 2016-2017 academic year. As part of their year-long fellowship, the two will take part in the Center's weekly seminar, which brings together graduate students working in areas of practical ethics from across the university. This coming year, in addition to doctoral candidates in Philosophy, the Center's list of Graduate Fellows includes students in Environmental Studies and Geography, Health Policy, Modern European History, Religion, Sociology, and Education.

Kate Vredenburgh receives Derek C Bok Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates

Doctoral student Kate Vredenburgh has received one of the five Derek C Bok Awards for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates awarded in 2016. This marks the second year in a row that a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy has won this prestigious award. The award includes a $1,000 prize from a gift given by David G. Nathan ’51, M.D. ’55 (Robert A. Stranahan Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School) and his wife Jean Louise Friedman Nathan.

Paul Marcucilli receives Pforzheimer Summer Fellowship

Harvard Library recently announced that Paul Marcucilli will be one of five graduate students to receive a Pforzheimer Summer Fellowship for work on a library project this summer. Paul is the second graduate student from the Department of Philosophy to receive this fellowship, succeeding Olivia Bailey, who received it last year.

Philosophy graduate student Zoe Jenkin and Edgar Pierce Professor of Philosophy Susanna Siegel have co-edited a special issue of The Review of Philosophy and Psychology.

The issue, which focuses on cognitive penetrability and addresses topics such as perceptual justification and implicit bias, contains contributions by philosophers and psychologists Gary Lupyan, Fiona Macpherson, Reginald Adams, Anya Farennikova, Jona Vance, Francisco Marchi, and Robert Cowan. Céline Leboeuf accepts tenure-track position at FIU

Céline Leboeuf, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Philosophy, has accepted a tenure-track position in the philosophy department of Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. She will begin her new position in the fall of 2016.

In 2015, Leboeuf was selected as one of eight Harvard Horizons Scholars. This prestigious award recognizes students "whose ideas, innovations, and insights have the potential to reshape their disciplines."

2016 Prize Announcements

The Department of Philosophy is once again happy to announce its annual competition for the Francis Bowen Prize and the Bechtel Prize in Philosophy. These awards, given annually to a deserving undergraduate or graduate student for, respectively, the best essay in moral or political philosophy and the best essay on any philosophical topic, are made possible by generous gifts to the department.

This year the deadline for submission is April 25th at 5:00 PM. Interested undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
