January 17, 2018

In December, Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences announced the [appointment of eight graduate students to its Harvard Horizons Scholars programs.](https://gsas.harvard.edu/news/stories/announcing-2018-harvard-horizons-scholars) Among them was the Department of Philosophy's own Wendy Salkin. Salkin--who is also a Mellon Sawyer Fellow at Boston University this year where she participates in a series of seminars on the theme of “Humanities and Technology at the Crossroads"-- is currently finishing her dissertation, entitled *The Nicest Problem: Informal Political Representatives and Their Responsibilities to the Represented*. In the fall, she will take up her position as assistant professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University. Salkin is the **second** [student from Harvard's Department of Philosophy to be named a Harvard Horizons Scholar.](/news/c%C3%A9line-leboeuf-named-harvard-horizons-scholar)

The Harvard Horizons Scholars program recognizes the innovative work being done by graduate students at Harvard and offers them "in-depth mentoring on the art of effective presentation." The program culminates in a series of presentations by the selected scholars at Harvard's Sanders Theatre on April 11, 2018, at 4:30 p.m .

Perhaps fittingly for a program designed to help scholars hone their skills as effective speakers, Salkin's scholarship focuses on a variety of issues and problems that surround the act of "speaking for others." You can read more about her work and on her career both at and outside of Harvard [here](https://gsas.harvard.edu/news/stories/speaking-others).

In receiving this prestigious opportunity, Salkin is joined by Marie-Christine Nizzi, a graduate student in the Department of Psychology and a former was a Fellow in Philosophy from 2011-2013.

The Department of Philosophy at Harvard warmly congratulates both Wendy and Marie-Christine on this fine achievement.
