In standard model-theoretic semantics, logical terms are said to be fixed in the system while nonlogical terms remain variable. Much effort has been devoted to characterizing logical terms, those terms that should be fixed, but little has been said on their role in logical systems: on what fixing them precisely amounts to. If you're a newcomer, the basic idea is this: people sign up for ten-minute slots during which they can read their own poetry or any other poetry that they really like (or really, anything creative that has poetic qualities).
So, come to read or just to listen! And bring your significant other, friend, family members, etc. People from all departments are welcome. There will be drinks and snacks, good poetry and excellent company. We hope to see you there!
We invite our concentrators to celebrate their return to campus and reconnect with their fellow concentrators at a party hosted by the Philosophy Department.
Sophomores considering a concentration or secondary in philosophy are invited to an informational session in Robbins Library on Friday, September 12th at 3pm. Please join Bernhard Nickel, Cheryl Chen, and James Bondarchuk for a discussion of various aspects of the philosophy concentration and secondary. Afterwards, sophomores are invited to attend the welcome party for concentrators in the Bechtel Room.
