Doctoral candidate David Thorstad has received the Derek C. Bok Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates. David was one of only five graduate students at Harvard to receive this prestigious award in 2019. The citation that accompanied the award highlights David's exceptional creativity in making notoriously difficult material come alive, as well as his generosity in giving time outside of class or office hours to helping students deepen their understanding of the material. Perhaps most notably, David was recognized for his great care towards and ability to mentor students who are traditionally unerrepresented in philosophy. As undergraduate Tez Clark wrote:

“David consistently went above and beyond in encouraging me and other female students to continue our studies in philosophy. I can honestly say that David’s encouragement was a large part of the reason that I decided to continue in philosophy and do my graduate work in the field.”

The Department of Philosophy offers its warmest congratualtions to David on this outstanding achievement.
