The Department of Philosophy congratulates Assistant Professor Samantha Matherne on her article (co-authored with Nick Riggle) “Schiller on Freedom and Aesthetic Value: Part I” being chosen as one of the “Best of 2020” philosophy articles from Oxford University Press.
Originally published in the British Journal of Aesthetics, Matherne and Riggle claim that “Schiller’s theory of aesthetic value serves as the key to understanding not only his view of aesthetic engagement, but also his distinctive account of individual and political freedom” and offer “a reconstruction of Schiller's view that aesthetic value is the only path to individual freedom.”
