Marc Gasser-Wingate awarded Adams Prize

The George Plimpton Adams Prize has been awarded to Marc Gasser-Wingate for his dissertation  “On Perception’s Role in Aristotle’s Epistemology” (May 2015). Gasser-Wingate joined the philosophy department at Boston University in 2015, where he is an assistant professor.

Johann Frick awarded Carrier Prize

The Emily and Charles Carrier Prize has been awarded to to Johann Frick for his dissertation  “ ‘Making People Happy, Not Making Happy People’: A Defense of the Asymmetry Intuition in Population Ethics” (November 2014). Frick joined the philosophy department at Princeton University in the spring of 2014, where he is an assistant professor. He has a joint appointment with the Center for Human Values.

Elizabeth Miller, currently Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham (U.K.), has accepted an offer to join the Department of Philosophy at Yale University in the fall of 2015 as Assistant Professor of Philosophy. While at Birmingham, Miller taught courses on the philosophy of science and the mind-body problem.

Céline Leboeuf, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Philosophy, has been selected as one of eight Harvard Horizons Scholars for 2015. This prestigious award recognizes students "whose ideas, innovations, and insights have the potential to reshape their disciplines."

Harvard Horizons Scholars receive targeted mentoring, support for professional development, coaching in public presentation, and the opportunity to present a public talk about their research at the Harvard Horizons Symposium.

Oded Na'aman publishes "Reasons of Love: A Case against Universalism about Practical Reason"

Oded Na'aman's article "Reasons of Love: A Case against Universalism about Practical Reason" will appear in The Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, CX, No. 3, October 2015. Na'aman's article is an outgrowth of his dissertation entitled "Loving, Valuing, Regretting, and Being Oneself," which examines issues about the rationality of attachment, including the rationality of love, valuation, regret, and loss.

Graduate students recognized for excellence in teaching.

Three doctoral students in the philosophy department have been recognized for their outstanding teaching during the Spring of 2014. Javier Caride, Céline Leboeuf, and Paul Marcucilli were all awarded the Derek Bok Certificate of Excellence and Distinction in Teaching from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University.

Javier Caride received the award for his work on Philosophy 15: Moral Dilemmas, while Céline Leboeuf earned hers for her Philosophy 97 tutorial on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Paul Marcucilli's award was given in recognition for his...
