  • What do you like about studying philosophy at Harvard? Philosophy is a very humbling concentration, despite perhaps popular beliefs about the field. I think the only proper way to do philosophy is one that involves a constant stream of humility, which is sometimes overwhelming, but that I personally really enjoy. Studying philosophy is about sitting in a room with people who are much smarter than you and trying to solve a puzzle together. Reading philosophy is often like trying to solve a murder mystery - you have to collect all your evidence and try to get to the bottom of it. Most of the time, despite your best efforts, the mystery remains unsolved. It can be very unsatisfying. As Oscar Wilde said once about cigarettes, I say about philosophy -- the perfect pleasure. Philosophy, especially at Harvard, is exquisite, and leaves one wanting more.
