Research Interests: Metaphilosophy, History of Philosophy

Ian is primarily interested in 'critical metaphilosophy,' the view that traditional philosophy violates the conditions for its own intelligibility, especially as articulated by Kant, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. His dissertation project focuses on the nature and sources of critical metaphilosophy, whether it is compatible with realism, and whether it is susceptible to charges of self-undermining.

Ian is also interested in related currents in the history of philosophy, including pragmatism, ordinary language philosophy, (post-)analytic philosophy (esp. Davidson, Putnam, and Rorty), phenomenology and hermeneutics, and post-Kantian idealism.

Ian graduated from the University of Vermont in 2014 with a B.A. in Philosophy and English. He joined the department in 2015.
