Lorenzo Manuali
Research Interests: Social and political philosophy, cognitive science (esp. addiction), and philosophy of technology/AI
Lorenzo (he/him) is interested in how changing social conditions arising from the Information Age are negatively affecting our agency – individual and collective. He is especially interested in how non-state institutions like journalism, philanthropy, and business at large are being affected by these changes, and what democratic constraints/obligations they might have as a result. Lorenzo is also interested in foundational questions in democratic theory as well, especially justifications for liberal democracy. With respect to technology, Lorenzo works on how efforts to use LLMs to enhance democratic processes might threaten or support democratic values as well as how addiction to technology threatens our individual agency.
